Our Mission
Aztec Sports Medicine Association is an organization meant to guide undergraduate and graduate students to pursue further educational and career opportunities in the healthcare field with an emphasis in sports medicine. This encompasses a range of fields such as, acupuncture, sports massage, fitness, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, sports psychology, physical therapy, chiropractic or sports medicine physician and anything in between. Our goal is to expose our members to as many fields as possible in the realm of sports medicine to direct their career path and become involved in the community. ASMA strives to build motivated sports medicine professionals while creating family-like bonds amongst its students who share the same passion.
Established in 2017
Aztec Sports Medicine Association began in the spring of 2017 when a group of passionate sports medicine students felt that San Diego State needed a sports medicine specific organization that covered a broad spectrum of careers in the field. The vision for it was to create an environment where interested students could find a career while being excited about the organization. ASMA is driven by the desire to provide its members with ample opportunity for exposure to the field and build long term relationships with their peers, while still fulfilling their academic goals to ultimately become a sports medicine professional.
Our Founder
My name is Victor Bonavida I am the founder and current President of Aztec Sports Medicine Association. I am a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer (CPT), certified Functional Movement Screener (FMS) and also a Dynamic Neuromuscular Exercise Trainer (DNSET). Prior to transferring to SDSU, I worked in a sports therapy clinic where I gained most of my experience, working with patients of all different ages and athletic ability. I also have emergency medicine experience from working action sports events such as the Dew Tour and Nitro Circus. Combined I have had over 3,000 hours in these fields, as well as seen countless orthopedic procedures in the operating room. Using my own previous experiences and opportunities, I strive to lead by example and help other passionate students towards their academic and career goals while making connections with others in the sports medicine field through the Aztec Sports Medicine Association.
