ASMA would love to shed a spotlight on our President and Founder Victor Bonavida! Victor has lead this new association to a great start and we would love for everyone to learn a little more about him! Victor is a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer (CPT), certified Functional Movement Screener (FMS) and also a Dynamic Neuromuscular Exercise Trainer (DNSET). Prior to transferring to SDSU, he worked in a sports therapy clinic where he gained most of his experience, working with patients of all different ages and athletic ability. Victor also has had emergency medicine experience from working action sports events such as the Dew Tour and Nitro Circus. Combined Victor has had over 3,000 hours in these fields, as well as seen countless orthopedic procedures in the operating room. Using his own previous experiences and opportunities, Victor strives to lead by example and help other passionate students towards their academic and career goals while making connections with others in the sports medicine field through the Aztec Sports Medicine Association. Thank you Victor for everything that you've done and do for ASMA!!

Within meeting on 11/7/2017, ASMA had two great guest speakers come to discuss the opportunities that AMEDD can provide for pre-health students. CPT Frush and SSG Thomas went into depth about the amazing scholarships and learning possibilities that are offered through the AMEDD. ASMA members also had a chance to ask any questions they had about the programs that were presented. We very much appreciated the time our amazing guests speakers took out of their day to talk to us about the AMEDD programs! If anyone had any more questions about the presentation or want to learn more about a specific program within the Army, here is the contact email for SGT Kay: [email protected] . We look forward as a club to many more guest speaker just like we had within this meeting!
Mark your calendars for ASMA's pizza fundraiser at Woodstock Pizza!! Bring your friends & join us for a great time and great pizza! Don't forget to show this flyer at the time of purchase! See you all there!
ASMA is getting involved in many volunteer opportunities outside our club to help out our community! Last meeting we mentioned supporting SDSU's Help the Homeless! This club is a nonprofit student organization that collects donations all semester & distributes items to SD’s homeless community downtown. Members can get involved by either donating items that are needed or participating in person during the prep/distribution of the items! Here is some more information on what is being asked to donate, where you can donate and the dates for prep/distribution volunteering!
In meeting on 10/24, we discussed many volunteer opportunities that were coming up - such as donating to the SDSU's Help the Homeless and the Best Buddies' club upcoming 5k. Afterwards, we welcomed guest speaker Rachel Bradd to discuss the Palomar Pathmaker Internship. Rachel went over the details of the internships such as how to apply, deadlines, opportunities and answered any questions our members had! The speech was very informative and gave our members a glimpse into the great internship this program offers. At the end of meeting, we wrapped up by looking at a Postural Analysis sheet. Members paired up and went through the check sheet together, checking each other's postures. This activity was great to introduce everyone to a checklist that is commonly used in sports medicine! We look forward to our next meeting!
On Saturday 10/21/17, members of ASMA participated in the Ossur Running and Mobility Clinic! Volunteers assisted lower limb amputees with running and mobility exercises to help improve their balances and speed with their prosthetics. At the event, there were all ages and different ability levels. The clinic was sponsored by Ossur, a prosthetic building company. Our members had an amazing time and described it as an experience that reminded themselves why they are studying to be in the sports medicine field!
Another amazing student organization on campus is Flying Samaritans, and two of our executive board members participate in the volunteering this org does! Once a month, Taylor and Brooke (as well as other amazing volunteers) travel to the community of Ejido Matamoros in Mexico and staff a free medical clinic. At this clinic, community members visit labs and are able to get tests done, such as getting their blood glucose checked. These community members are then able to see a certified medical provider or physical therapist, as well as receive free medication. This organization is a non-profit student-run organization that treats over 80 patients a month! If you or a friend are interested in getting involved or would like more information about Flying Samaritans, Brooke and Taylor are happy to share their experiences and the website is posted below! http://www.sdsuflyingsamaritans.org During the meeting on 10/10/17, there were many updates for the club! Members were educated about different opportunities that were open for them to use, such as a "Health Professions Advising" presentation that would be held on campus and a few professionals that were open to working with our members to give them experience. The main events for this meeting was a team-building exercise of the Human Knot, as well as communication exercises. The goal was to help get members interacting with each other and with the executive board. ASMA also has created mentor groups within the club to help guide members in their pursuit of their careers. Each executive member is excited to give advice to younger students on how to find success and get closer to their goals!
In the meeting on September 26th, Dr. Sean Drake came to speak to ASMA members to help guide the students in the right direction for each of the careers they want to purse. He encouraged everyone to start looking into volunteer opportunities now and suggested that we should diversify the internships we apply for so that we could not only narrow down the jobs we have a passion for, but also get a broader knowledge of different fields. On BlackBoard, the College of Heath and Human Services posts a list of clinics and hospitals all over San Diego, as well as their contact information so that anyone can start their search to finding internships and volunteer opportunities. The ASMA executive board is also more than willing to help anyone out and discuss their own personal experiences and advice! We are so honored to have Dr. Drake be our advisor and cannot wait for the semester ahead!
Last Friday, ASMA hiked Crowles Mountain to help get to know each other and get active! This hike was the first of many fun social events& was a great start to the semester!
